The 209-500 series is an electric train that first appeared in 1998. In 2008, four sets were transferred to the Keiyo Line from the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi lines to replace the 201 series.
After the introduction of the E233-5000 series, three sets were transferred to the Musashino Line, leaving one set as a spare. The only 209-500 series remaining on the Keiyo Line has since undergone major equipment upgrades and is now in operation with the E233-5000 series, and is in service on the Sotobo Line and Uchibo Line as well as the Keiyo Line.
