The 24 series 24 type is a limited express sleeper train that was introduced in 1973. Based on the 14 series 14 type, the power supply system was changed to a centralized power supply system similar to the 20 series passenger cars. After being used on the Sanyo Main Line and Tokaido Main Line since its introduction, it began to be used in the Tohoku area, including the Blue Train 'Yuzuru' in 1976. When it was introduced, it was equipped with three-tiered sleeping berths, but around 1982 it was converted to two-tiered sleeping berths.
'Yuzuru' is a sleeper limited express train that connected Ueno and Aomori via the Joban Line, which was introduced in 1965. It served as a connection to the Seikan Ferry, and at its peak, seven round trips were operated with limited express sleeping berths and sleeper trains, but the number of round trips decreased due to the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen and the Seikan Tunnel, and regular train operation ended in 1993.
