The 183 series 1000-series is a DC express train that was introduced in 1974 to replace the aging 181 series of the Joetsu Line's 'Toki' Limited Express and the 157 series of the 'Amagi' Limited Express to Izu.
The Chuo Line's Limited Express 'Azusa' initially used the 183 series 0-series and 189-series, but with the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen, the 'Azusa' began to be used in 1982 when the 'Toki' Limited Express cars were transferred to it.
In 1987, after the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the 'Upgraded Azusa' was introduced with upgraded interior equipment and a new paint job to compete with the express buses on the Chuo Expressway.
The upgraded trains were used not only for the 'Azusa' Limited Express, but also for the 'Shonan Shinjuku Liner' which started operating between Shinjuku and Odawara at that time, and the 'Wing Azusa' which extended its operation from Chiba to Narita Airport.
By 1990, eight sets had been upgraded, but between 1992 and 1993 the trains were repainted again in Azusa colour, a combination of foggy grey with alpine blue and fantasy violet.
